Commitment to Community Service
It is one of my strongly held beliefs that all people deserve a safe and decent place to live. With this in mind I proudly perform pro bono legal services for the Bar Association of San Francisco's (BASF) eviction defense program.Without BASF's help, poor and low-income San Francisco residents would have no choice but to square off alone in eviction proceedings against their landlord and their landlord's attorney. The chances of a positive outcome for the tenant under those circumstances would be bleak.
With an attorney, tenants stand a much better chance of not necessarily winning their case (although this occurs frequently), but of achieving a fair result, which is what is intended under our legal system.
I was happy this year to receive the 2007 Housing Justice Award and the 2007 Outstanding Volunteer in Public Service Award at BASF's annual awards ceremony held in May. It was an honor to be nominated by BASF and to receive the award from Judge David Ballati (pictured) and to meet California Supreme Court Chief Justice Ronald George, whose commitment to community service was clearly evident through his attendance at the event.
